cleaning screen?

Can anyone give any good tips on cleaning a computer screen? The more I try to clean mine the more smears I seem to get on it! Have tried glasses cleaner, screen cleaner but still having no luck. It is when computer is turned off that all the smears show!

Lesley, all I do with mine is wipe it over with a damp clean J-cloth. No detergents or anything, just plain hot water.
