  • US census help please

I am trying to trace Walter Pegg b.1866 Great Walsingham, Norfolk. He left England between 1881 and 1891 and travelled to New York. I can't find an outgoing passenger record for him but I have found his return record in 1895. Could somebody who has access to the US census, kindly see if they can locate him during his stay there? Many thanks

    Hi Teresa,
I have had a look but no luck so far but then I seem to remember that the 1890 US census was destroyed in a fire - perhaps someone else can confirm this .....off to google....
yes the records were mostly destroyed in a fire but some substitute records do exist - have a google and you will find some info.
I will have a look for 1880 just in case Walter's voyage was early in the year.

        Might be worth experimenting here?
Search America's historic newspaper pages from 1756-1963 or use the U.S. Newspaper Directory to find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present.

Thanks Christine, that looks very interesting. Walter Pegg left New York very quickly due to some trouble he was in so I might be lucky and find something here....
