  • Can you help find Speight family Preston, Lancs in 1861

It might be a variation on spelling of their name but I cannot find them at all. They were born in Preston, Lancs but by 1871 are living with a 'grandmother' in Clayton, Lancs:

    1871 Head: Elizabeth Harrison 64 b1807 b Salmsbury, Lancs
Son: James Harrison 20 b1851 Preston. Unmarried. Warehouse man cotton mill

Grand-children, all b Preston and cotton weavers power loom:

    Isabella Speight 19 Unmarried b1852
    Elizabeth Speight 19 “ b1852
    John Speight 21 “ b1854

24 Canal St Civil par/town: Clayton Le Moors
Ecc par: All Saints Reg district: Blackburn Sub-reg district: Harwood
The girls' births were reg 12/1851 Preston and likely to be twins.

In 1851 their parents are with father, Robert's family in Preston:

    1851 Fa: Jacob ?50 b1801 Lancaster. Shoemaker.
Mo: Isabella 55 b1806 Newbiggen, Westmoreland.
Dau: Isabella 26 b1825 Power loom weaver. Wryesdale, Lancs.
Dau Mary 19 b1834 Glasson, Lancs. Unmarried. Heald knitter
Son: Robert Speight 17 b1834 ? Dolphinholme, Lancs. Married. Shoemaker
Dau: (?wife of Robert) Mary 18 b1833 Preston. Married. Cotton Frame tenter.
17 Gt Shaw St Civil par: Preston Ecc par: Holy Trinity
Reg/sub-reg district: Preston ED, institution: 2pp Household sch: 86

I can't find their parents in 1861 either. I can't link Elizabeth Harrison (in 1871) as their grandmother but she is on back burner. Their father married Mary Walmsley on 24/12/1850 St John, Preston. His parents were Jacob & Isabella.

Thanks for any help in locating the 3 Speight children in 1861 if you can.

Elaine - just noticed 2 doors up is Matthew Clayton's family. He married Isabella Speight, was a butcher and they moved to Blackpool by 1891. A case of the girl and boy next door.

Useful when you can link them together like that.

If only I can unravel who Elizabeth Harrison is...think she must somehow be Mary Speight (nee Walmsley) and Joseph Walmsley's mother. She is Mary's children's grandmother in 1871...She was born (a/c to later census) in Balderstone (part of Salmsbury) where Joseph is born in 1861 census.

Need a night's sleep for that one! Thanks again Elaine. Last few pieces to put in place on this one.

This is making my head spin :D I tried to find them in 1861 yesterday but Elaine beat me to it. This morning I have been trying to fathom out Elizabeth etc. The best I can do (though I'm not sure it helps) is the marriage of an Elizabeth Walmsley in Preston Sept 1948 ref 21 422 and on the same page is a Thomas Harrison. If it's her she would have been about 40 though, so possibly married before.
In 1851 there is an Elizabeth Harrison aged 39, born Blackburn, married to a Thomas aged 40, living in Heaton Norris Lancashire, no children there.

The most likely birth for James though would be in Blackburn as this covers Balderstone. There are lots of possible Lancashire births of course but there is one in Blackburn that looks a possibility - March 1851 ref 21 91.

Sorry, I'm probably just muddying the waters even more :(

Hi Christine...thanks for having a go at this - I think I found her in 1841 in Osbaldeston(e) (I know these areas fortunately and Osbaldestone, Balderstone and Salmesbury are all together and not far from Preston.

              1841 Joseph Bennet 60 b1775 Weaver.
              Elizabeth Walmsley 30 b1811
              Joseph “ 14 b1827
              John “ 8 b1833
              Mary “ 7 b1834

              Abbott House lower, Osbaldeston(e)
Civil par: Blackburn Hundred: Blackburn (Lwr Division)
Reg district: Blackburn Sub-reg district: Mellor

For Joseph Bennet, on IGI: ? IGI Joseph Bennet Spouse: Nancy Clarkson
              Marriage: 4/6/1800 Samlesbury.

Reckon this is the right family: right area, children's names and year of birth right. Mary Walmsley is said on alter census to be born in Preston but maybe she was...

On the previous page is :
              James Walmsley 47 b1794 Weaver.
              Rachel 22
              Margaret 20
              James 15
              Betty 13

              Lane Ends, Osbaldestone

I found Joseph Walmsley from the 1861 census I originally asked help with in 1851. He is in Preston:

1851 Joseph Walmsley (mistranscribed as Walmasley) 23 b1828 Balderstone. Head.
              Power Loom Weaver.
              Spouse: Margaret 18 b1833 Ribchester. P. L. Weaver.
              Henry 7 Mo b1850 Preston.
Lodger: Rebecca Disley 63 b Preston. Unmarried. Housekeeper.

21 Crown St Civil par: Preston Ecc par: St Thomas

Need to absorb your info now and unscramble my brain...I am a lot further on than I was at the beginning of my post

This is all I could come up with for possible marriage of an Elizabeth to a Walmsley in/nr Salmslesbury, Balde(r)(s)ton.

Thos Walmsley Spouse: Elizabeth Dewhurst Marriage: 13/5/1833 Samlesbury
Too late for the birth of Joseph in 1828?

Sudden inspiration to search for John Walmsley b1833 Balderstone, mentioned in the 1841 Osbaldeston census with Elizabeth, Mary & Joseph.

I have him in later census records with own family in and around area but this clinches I have the right one...and that perhaps the 1841 is safe...in 1861 he is in Clayton-le-Moors, where the rest of the family are:

1861 Head: John Walmsley 28 b1833 Balderstone. Cloth looker.
Spouse: Mary 29 Cotton weaver power.
                  Ephraim 8 Scholar.
                  Elizabeth Alice 4 “
Alice Turner 23 Boarder. Both cotton weavers power.
                  William Turner 16 “

                  Chapel St Civil par: Clayton-le-Moors
Ecc par: All Saints Reg district: Blackburn Sub-reg district: Harwood
ED, institution: 1 Household sch: 134

Update: 1851 looks like him in Preston:

1851 John Walmsley 18 b1833 Balderstone. Book keeper.
                  Spouse: Mary 19

50 High St Civil par: Preston Ecc par: St Paul

In case anyone searches for the Walmsleys and comes on to this thread have solved part of the puzzle with Online Parish Clerk for Lancs website. Joseph, John and Mary Walmsley were all illigitimate. So that is why couldn't find a marriage for their mother, Elizabeth. Here are the entries:

                    Baptism: 12/1/1834 St Leonard, Balderstone.
Mary Walmsley - daughter of Betty Walmsley
                    Abode: Balderstone
                    Occupation of mother: Spinster

Baptism: 3/6/1827 St Leonard, Balderstone. Joseph Walmsley - son of Betty Walmsley.
                    Abode: Balderstone
                    Occupation of mother: Spinster

                    Baptism: 28/6/1832 St Leonard, Balderstone
John Walmsley - son of Elizabeth Walmsley Born: 27/6/1832
                    Abode: Balderstone.

                    Occupation of mother: Spinster

As they lived with a Joseph Bennett in 1841, wonder if he was the father?

Elizabeth Walmsley did marry Thomas Harrison in 1848 as his name is on their son, James's marriage entry on OPC.
