  • Help needed to read Cumbria and Lancs birthplaces 1851 census

On to another branch of my friend's family tree now, the Speight family.

The birthplaces I need help to read are:

    Mo Isabella
    Dau Isabella

Can't quite read Fa's age but will try and find in another census - not clear.

Must look up what a Heald knitter and Cotton France tenter is...

1851 Son: Robert Speight 17 b1834 ? Dolphinholme, Lancs. Shoemaker.
Fa: Jacob ?50 b1801 Lancaster. Shoemaker.
    Mo: Isabella 55 b1806 ? Westmoreland.
Dau: Isabella 26 b1825 Power loom weaver. ?dale, Lancs
Dau Mary 19 b1834 Married. Glasson, Lancs. Heald knitter

Dau: (?in law) Mary 18 b1833 Preston. Cotton France tenter.

Lodger: Elizabeth Mare 33 b Preston. Single. Heald knitter.

17 Gt Shaw St Civil par: Preston Ecc par: Holy Trinity
Reg/sub-reg district: Preston ED, institution: 2pp Household sch: 86

Thanks for any light you can shed.

Apart from Westmorland and Lancashire, it's a difficult one. Will have a scroll through Genuki to see if I can see any suitable parish names that match.

Heald Knitter = Made 'healds' - lengths of cord with an eye in the middle through which the warp threads on a loom ran so that they could alternately be raised and lowered for the shuttle to pass through with the weft thread.

The other occupation you queried is, I think, Cotton Frame Tenter

There's an entry on the IGI which is possibly your Isabella
          Isabella Speight
Christening: About 16 MAY 1824 Over Wryesdale, , Lancashire

... POB on census could well be Wryesdale.

Thanks Elaine - you have cracked that one. Have just had to whizz back into Pickup mode as Lancs CC rang to tell me I need to contact Blackburn R.O. It is difficult now that Blackburn has gone unitary...and they require a letter and cheque rather than phone/online orders. So off now to catch the post.

Many thanks for solving this one.

Just an update, found someone's tree on Ancestry with the marriage of Jacob Speight and Isabella Bradley
1822 Melling in Londsdale, Lancs. Going back to check that b/place of their dau Isabella in 1824 to see if what we thought was Wryesdale could be Londsdale...
