    Can someone tell me what a Sawyer did please? Would it have been connected to carpentry?

            For some it wasn't a very healthy job either. In the days before engine-driven circular saws, logs were sawn into planks in a saw-pit. There were two men, one each end of a very long saw. "Top dog" stood above the log and "bottom dog" was in the saw-pit, in a cloud of saw-dust.

                I have several sawyers in my tree. They lived into their 70s and 80s so I guess they must have managed to be 'on top' quite soon in their working life.
