  • anyone know how to change settings on a printer!!

I am trying to connect printer to windows Laptop, its a lexmark, Z735.... I have been on their web site and after many hours (and I am not joking) managed to download printer to laptop, windows 7...now all is fine, except it won't print, it keeps telling me 'set currant settings to USB port" which I can't seem to do. does any one know? how to change settings, I have searched setting, but can't seem to change or to be honest not sure what to do.....I have been on Lemark help line, which is fine, but they want money!!! lol, so I thought I would ask here first many thanks.......Lilly...

This happened to me and it took me a while to work out what had happened. You should have several places on your laptop that you can plug in a USB and you can either try each one out in turn (just change the wire from the printer to a different laptop port) or change the one that it has chosen.

You might want to try the first option just to make sure that it has installed properly first

(I'm sure someone with more tecchie know how than me will correct me if I'm wrong)

Thank Jackie, I have already tried both USB ports, (I only have two) and neither helped...I turned everything off, laptop and printer, hoping it would complete download, but that didn't help, I have printing pending, but it just won't print, it keeps telling me to change the settings to a USB port.....such a pain, as I really want to start updating my tree to paper folders....many thanks anyway....")...Lilly..

If your laptop is anything like mine, there are 2 ports on the right hand side and some other ports on the left. The printer installed onto the one on the left.

If that fails, find your printer in the control panel. It should have a tick on it if its the default printer.

Right click on it and then on "Printer Properties". Then click the tab that says "Ports". There should be a tick in one of the boxes (mine says USB001 Virtual printer port for USB)

You should be able to put the tick in the USB port you prefer

Hi Jackie, right I have done everything you have told me, and guess what...It still won't print.....I only have the two USB ports on the left of the laptop, my disc player is on the right hand side...anyway, I changed the settings just like you said, even shut down the laptop and printer, no luck, but I still have printing jobs pending, it really is odd that the laptop won't send inform to the print...I guess I am going to have to delete printer from computer and start all over again, and this time put in USB001 for virtual printer port for USB port. I can't see how it will help, but can't think of anything else......I just can't understand when everything is connected, and even jobs are saying they are pending, it won't print......grrrr....Lilly

Its a window 7 that I bought in the USA (I am in the UK) about 3/4 weeks ago, its great, hmm just doesn't what to connect to my printer/scanner/family tree maker, you name it. I have had nothing but problems with it. Its OK bringing these new windows out, with new gadgets on them, but if none of your previous printers etc work with it. well......what's the point.
daughter has a lovely new cannon connected to her Mac computer, which she said I can use, but I have loads of ink for this Lexmark that I want to use, and to stop any arguments with daughter as I am using her ink lol....oh, its a ACER windows 7, naw, I've never hear of it either, but at 200 pounds, I couldn't say no.....oh as its American, it has no pound sign on it, its replaced with a $ dollar lol.....thank you for your help, I will try and reinstall it and see what happens, fingers crossed......Lilly

**Val** Oooo, I haven't seen that web site, I will go and check it out, and see if I have any luck.....thank you...:...Lilly

**Val** checked the web site, long story of it, is they want $30.00....so didn't bother...lol.......Lilly

what costs ??? if you click on the download now it does not charge you anything ?? its to download the drivers you can run it now or save it, it detects what drivers you have installed

funny enough ,not that you will find it funny, that was a Lexmark too , they really use up the ink I have now got a Epson, much cheaper to run.
Did you install it using a Disc ???? I wonder if you plugged in the USB lead too soon ??? aren't you supposed to install a certain amount before plugging that in??
Have you tried going to your System then Device manager see if there is a yellow triangle by any of the USB ports ???
Oh and yes PC Wonderful World told me it was compatible but wasn't.

I don't know if this will help but I have just had to try and help install a Canon printer for a friend who has updated to 7. We had the devils own job but in the end I uninstalled the printer completely, found the latest driver required for Canon and 7, downloaded it first and then plugged in the computer. 7 found the printer and new downloaded driver and we were off and running. When any os is updated the drivers often need updating I gather if you are adding hardware. Do not use the old disc as the drivers are no use on them for the new system!!! Good luck!
There is no absolute truth - and no final answer.

As Marion says, you should install the drivers BEFORE connecting the printer.

If you installed the drivers after connecting the printer, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling it.
Here are the instructions for uninstalling: http://support.lexmark.com/index?id=...erlocale=EN_UK

Your printer is listed in the list of compatible products for Windows 7: http://support.lexmark.com/index?pag...erlocale=EN_UK
which says: * Use Windows Vista drivers. For products marked with an asterisk, the Windows Vista drivers are compatible with Windows 7

                                  Also see: http://support.lexmark.com/index?pag...&actp=TOP_DOCS

If you still have trouble, you could try contacting support by phone or e-mail. They also have a Live Chat service Mon - Fri: 9 am - 5:30 pm

Marion's advice is the best solution.
                                    Fully uninstall the printer
                                    Disconnect it from the PC
Go to the maker's site and download the latest drivers for Windows 7 (Vista could also work if they do not have 7)
                                    Install the drivers
Plug in the printer for Windows to see it has been attached and it should then use the new drivers to work it
