  • Who lived in this house

I only ever seem to visit this forum when I need help, which is a shame because whenever I do stay and have a look around I really enjoy it, anyway straight to the point I suppose. Can anyone tell me how to find the history of a house, my grandmother used to live in please

This is not something I know about but a good start for any search could be just to "google" the address.
Another thought is to visit/phone etc local archives and look for poll/rate books - not sure of the real name.
In Scotland we have sasine records (sp) - I haven't used these yet but they have land registry and title deeds etc (I think). There should be something similar in England.
Your local family history society may be able to help.
Sorry - I am rambling - just a few thoughts.

Where about are you looking at and what time period?
    Good luck

Not sure where the house is?? - you could also try the London Gazette for example and enter the address...http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/hom...geotype=London

I've done a brief introductory article on researching the history of a house on my website. It's for Essex, but you could use it as a template for anywhere in the country.

Try this document from the Essex Record Office

        Hope this helps

You do not mention dates but if going back beyond 1911 I would start with the census but as English Bob has suggested that will need an address for starters! If forward from 1911 and again provided you know the address, then I would look at the rate books/poll books as that will also give you owners/occupiers. These latter books go back beyond 1911 so you can use those in conjunction with census.

If the house dates back beyond 1841 then I would look at possible records in the CRO.

I have found Kelly's Directories helpful. My local library has a set for our area and some older ones are on line.

Trade Directories such as the Kellys Directories are very useful if the person you are looking for had a trade or a business of some sort. They also have a limited use for the residential private houses that are there, but as most people rented property for the years you are interested, do bear in mind that they will not contain the names of those who rented the property.
