  • Occupation on 1841 image?

I'm in the midst of starting my tree from scratch in an effort to get everything sourced perfectly. Quite a job with over 2000 people...

However, I've just re-checked this image from 1841: Class: HO107; Piece 780; Book: 4; Civil Parish: East Dereham; County: Norfolk; Enumeration District: 6; Folio: 37; Page: 7; Line: 10

Given that he's staying with his parents Charles & Hannah, what do you make of David Meachen's occupation? Surely they haven't got him locked up??!
    Kind regards,
    William

    It's inmate - which means resident/inhabitant.

It was used a lot in 1841 census and I also have it on 2 early marriage certs for the occupation of the brides.

Thanks Janet - I'd never seen it before except in workhouses!
      Kind regards,
