  • 1861 occupation question

    Hello all

I have found an ancestor on the 1861 census in Warrington.
The head of the household is Thomas Fairhurst a retired Corn and Flour merchant and his wife Sarah.
Under Sarah's occupation it says Lady, can anybody tell me what this means.

    Thankyou in advance.

I reckon it is a tongue in cheek reference to her living a life of leisure! Being a lady is not an occupation. Has the enumerator put a number next to it?

      Thankyou OC

I didnt think she would be an actual lady but we can dream lol.

Her husband being a Corn and Flour merchant aswell as most of her sons who also followed in the trade (Her husband was town councillor and son borough treasurer) I figured she would have been able to live quite well.
