I am looking for information about William (b1846, Standon, Staffs) Bates and wife Ann (b1849, Bucknall, Staffs). They moved to Seacombe, Cheshire by 1871, and had 2 children, Joseph and Elizabeth. William appears to have died by the 1881 census, possibly 1872 in Birkenhead, as Ann is then listed as the wife of James Kilby and the children as his step-children. Ann Kilby and husband James come up on the 1901 census with roughly the same birthdates living in Stoke, but James' birthplace has changed from Birkenhead to Abingdon in Berkshire. I can find no marriage or birth records for William or Ann.

You might find it worth while getting the birth certificate of one of the children, which would show the maiden name for Ann. Might help locate a marriage.
There are 3 birth registrations for a William Bates in 1845, registration district Stone (which is the registration district for Standon) - but until you locate a marriage certificate it's difficult to check which one is the right one.Elaine
