  • I want to have my own website

I am thinking about setting up a website for my trees. I have so much information in various places it would be nice to share a lot of it with others for posterity. Does anyone have any experience of this ? What software is available ? What do you use and is it easy to use ? Is there an ongoing cost ?

Any thoughts would be helpful as I am starting from scratch.

i used to have hair ;)

seriously though, the TNG site also has links to webhosts who will help you set up the software etc... all in all a damned good package

UPDATE: might help if she posted the url for her site too ;) http://www.julies-genealogy-pages.co.uk

That does look interesting and I may well go for it. Need to get my head round the "web hosting" aspects. All sounds complicated to me but I'm sure it's easier once you get into it. Presumably the fact it's US software isn't a factor ?

We also use the same software as Julie, but it is on my son's website. Very easy to use.

It's locked though as so many people took info with acknowledging all my hard work!!!

Wendy, other than you finding out who is looking at the site and possibly why, how does the login stop people plagiarising it once they have access ?

Simon, if they search for a name, they can only see a list of names and dobs. If they want any information regarding parents, siblings etc, then they have to contact me. I can then give them a password or send them info via e-mail.

Yes Val, you can import a Gedcom, and then edit anything once it's on the website.

                            From the TalkTalk support pages...

We do not support the use of PHP, ASP or database access on any of the personal webspace allocations.

                            So the answer is NO.

That's what I do Babs, though I pay it annually 'cos it's cheaper that way. I pay a tiny amount a year to have my own domain name too.

I note Simon wanted a website "for posterity".
If you want your research to survive on the web after your death it needs to be on a website that will remain live after your death.

This means using a host like Rootsweb or the LDS.
Any subscription site will be taken down after you stop paying subscriptions.
                                    Cheers
