  • Carney Family

I am trying to trace the parents of a James (Gem) (Jim) Carney born 5 Nov 1856 in Birmingham died 8 Sept 1941
He was a bare knuckle fighter english champion and also fought in America. The only information I can find is about
his career. Thanks for any help

    This looks like his birth
James Carney Year of Registration: 1856 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Birmingham (1837-1924) County: Warwickshire Volume: 6d Page: 103
Do yu have his birth certificate and if so what are his father and mother shown as ?
Do you know if he had another occupation as well as a fighter?

On a soundex search this came up for 1861 as a possibility with the suname spelt as Kerney

But I guess the best way to find parents is to get the birth certificate.

I was going to say that if you could find him on the 1861 census with his parents, then that should tell you. However I cannot find him using this spelling. Only ones I found born in Birmingham were born 1849 & 1861. I can't get images on my laptop (for some reason), so one of those may be him with the age mistranscribed.

How about this in 1881 where he's shown as a metal roller and a widower.

Ref Velma's post re 1861 census
The one born 1861 is shown as 1 month old on the image so that's right. The other born 1849 is shown as age 11 or 12 so that year is about right.
