  • 1851 & 1861 Census Lookups Please

I hope that someone can help me with some missing 1851 & 1861 Censuses - I've spent days looking but can't find what I am looking for and can only assume that there is a mis-spelling or mis-transcription of the name SUMNER.

I am looking for Henry Sumner and his Wife Esther (nee Dale). In 1841 they were living in Tower Hamlets, Islington, Middx shortly after their marriage in the same year.

I can't find them again until 1871 and 1881 when they are still in Islington.

What I am really trying to ascertain whether they are the Parents of George Sumner b c1848 in Islington.

In the 'missing years' between 1841 and 1871, George could have been born and then moved out. I have been unable to find a birth record that ties in for George. If Henry & Esther are not his Parents, then I am going down totally the wrong line so it is important that I ascertain whether they are or not.

My only real 'connection' is that on George's marriage cert to Catherine Hoather in 1868, both he and his Father Henry show as gas fitters, which is also the occupation of the Henry above in 1871.

Any help would be appreciated - thank you in anticipation.

Kristina, welcome to FTF! did henry die after the 1881 census? and if so did Esther remarry? if so I think I might have found a remarriage.

Esther Sumner Widow... married Herbert Edwin White. after banns. married 31 jan 1888 both of the parish of wandsworth, st mary battersea. Herbert was a batchelor and living at 8 Howie street it looks like. (this is just from the record of Banns that are on ancestry)

        no other details i'm afraid.

I think this is them in 1851.

                HO107; Piece: 1517; Folio: 283; Page: 24

Transcribed as Simmer and the wife's first name is down as Emma but the sons tally with the 1861 Wendy found. No sign of George though

i have found his bapt, Frederick William Sumner. born 7th Jan 1858 bapt 13 feb 1858 (though the 13 is back to front in the records) parents: henry/esther sumner gas fitter, abode: 40, percival street. Bapt at St. Thomas Charterhouse, Middlesex.

EDIT: just had another look at this bapt and the date is not clear at all, I suppose, it could read 21 which would then bring it in line date order with the rest of the bapts.

its the 6th entry down on left hand page.

Thank you to everyone who helped. It has saved me a lot of time.

I never would have thought of Lunner or Simmer. Did you use wildcards for searching or is it based on experience? Wish I had the knack.

                    Than you again.

in which case this looks most likely to be his birth ref:

alot of it is practice and knowing which letters get regularly mangled, sometimes you can use wildcarding, but not always.
