Found a Charles Henry Phillipps (same way as spelt on the 1911 census) registered 2nd Qtr, Greenwich, Greater London, 1d, 742 on Ancestry.

Found Charles Phillips in 1901 a car driver, widower, living at 17 Little ....Street, St Mary's Parish, Islington and working at Woolwich reference Cl RG13, Piece 193, Folio 84, Page 29. This says he was born in Islington 1873. He is living alone.

I'll see if I can find anything else

Brian, I have found this record.

                  William Charles Phillips
                  Age: 24
                  Estimated birth year: abt 1870
                  Spouse Name: Elizabeth Kingston
                  Spouse Age: 21
                  Record Type: Marriage
                  Event Date: 25 Nov 1894
                  Parish: St Stephen, Walworth Common
                  County: Middlesex
                  Borough: Southwark
                  Father Name: George Phillips
                  Spouse Father Name: Thomas Kingston

I have looked at the fulll certificate on Ancestry London records and it gives the father( George)the occupation of carman. The name Phillips seems to be very common in London. I don't know if "carman" was a popular occupation. It also states that William Charles is a baker. Any help? Could the vicar have recorded his names incorrectly although he does sign as William Charles

Well some of the people in my family did used to swap the names around, so
I suppose its possible...but charles was a carman as well, would he have gone from a baker to carman?
I am not so sure what do you think.

I have been having a look round Brian but there are so many Phillips in the London area that have given their children one or two of the names of your ancestor. I have looked at the marriage details of Charles and Mary and the 1911 census but no clues there. I have scoured the London marriages for Charles' earlier marriage but I can't find one. Sadly, the christening records don't list a father's occupation so that doesn't help. I hope someone else has a brainwave to help you.
