  • Any signature decipherers around?

I was wondering if anyone specialised in reading signatures.

I have two on a form which I thought were Goring, and it also looks like Young.

Sorry Julie - I didn't put it up as it was being cleaned in the photo section (tho I cant find it now!) - Here's another copy.
It is not as important now, tho it will be interesting to see what you think. I googled suffragettes and discovered that the signatures of the two lades (top left hand corner) is actually YOUNG, not GORING, and whilst the address is Latrobe Street Geelong, and I did have some Gorings living in Geelong, it seems to have been decided on that site (Suffragettes) that the name is YOUNG. Therefore not mine after all. It certainly can look like Goring though.

Yes I see what you mean, what I would do would be to compare the Y of young with the G of geelong, but I see how you think that they could be mistranscribed as well, maybe a good one to keep in mind? just incase you need to search again.

i added a correction to that petition for my ancestor, her surname was dettmann not deetermann, her signature was clear as day too. they said they changed it, but it was the same in the searches.

Julie - Someone in the Young family was quite adamant it was hers and added parents etc.

If it WAS my Ann Goring, I cant read the other christian name to confirm if it was her sister? Actually it looks like Ann up the top and Annie underneath????

Kyle - I understand where you are coming from. I suppose everyone wants to claim a suffragette !!!

I'll hang on to it though and see what eventuates.

That would certainly be the way if it were all in one hand, but these are signatures, so the letters won't be strictly comparable. If the people had been taught to write in the USA, then those first letters could certainly be "G", but I can see why either interpretation is plausible.

For what its worth it looks like Ann Young and Annie Young to me. Also I think the two names and addresses (same one) have been written by the same person. "I'll do yours Annie"

I guess the "Y" in Young is just slightly different to the G in Geelong?

You can compare the address belonging with the signatures though can't you? The addresses to the right of the Young/Goring signatures look like they are in the same handwriting as those signatures.

I learned to write cursive in both Holland and the US. The first letter of the signatures looks like the "G" as I was taught to write it in Holland as in this image: http://img447.imageshack.us/i/hoofdletters3vf.jpg/
The way I was taught to write a capital "G" in America was like this: http://www.gmbservices.ca/Jr/JrPics/...siveCapDir.jpg

It's very hard to tell if the signatures are Young or Goring as the image is so small and unclear. I think it could be either.

I'd have thought Goring, but if you google the suffragettes in Australia (I cant find it now) it has a typed list of what they THINK the name was - and people are asked to edit. But someone has claimed it to be Ann Young.

I really dont know if my family were Suffragettes or not. Now if it was the Womens Temperance Union - I would say yes - definitely lol
