Can anyone help please?
My family name is Nicholls (also spelt Nickols, Nicholes and Nichols in the 19th cent.)
The 1841 census has my g-g-grandfather William Nicholls as originating in '[I]reland]'
and my g-g-grandmother Mary Ann Nicholls is listed as of 'F[oreign].
Both died in Camberwell in 1850. William's death certificate has his year of
birth as 1790 and Mary Ann's certificate has hers at 1787.
I found a (1817) marriage record (St James, Westminster) for a Mary Ann Leach and
a William Nickols which I assumed was my g-g-grandmother and my g-g-grandfather,
although I was surprised at the English-sounding surname of Mary Ann as she is said
to be foreign.
However, I have now found a (1808) marriage record (Saint Anne, Soho, Westminster)
for a William Nicholes and a Mary Ann NARDEWALLE and this may be the correct record
but I cannot work out or find out from where the surname Nardewalle could arise.
Has anyone any idea please?
Thanks
David
