  • Brown family conumdrum

    Hello all

My 4th Grt Grandfather James Hodson born 1806 in Westhoughton married Elizabeth Brown in Jan 1826.
On the 1861 census in Chester, Cheshire there was a little boy aged 6 living with them by the name of Henry Brown who is down as nephew.
Elizabeth was born in Chester c1809 and Henry was also born in Chester c1855.

Now this gives me the impression that Elizabeth must have had a brother to have herself a nephew.
I cannot find any details to go with this and I have tried lots of different searches to try and connect the two of them.

Any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated.

    a few contenders:

    1871- RG10 piece 3731 folio 53 page 2 - st oswald, chester
a henry brown, b.1855 chester, cheshire. a hale boy for david and harriett foster. he is one of 21 servants of theirs!

    1871-RG10 piece 3724 folio 72 page 34 - st mary, chester
a henry brown, b.1855, chester, cheshire. he's a servant, living at home with parents john, b.1832, rowton, cheshire and mary b.1834, lumey/ludmey? flintshire.

there are 5 including the above in cheshire, and only these two in chester.

      Hiya Kyle

I spotted them, I did think that the Henry with John and Mary could be my guy but I would have to tie Elizabeth born c1809 and John born c1832 as brother and sister.

        Quiffdo

I can't help much (except to say I HATE THE BROWNS, lol) but I do have a tricky ancestor who was married three times and had children over a time span of 49 years. the eldest child of this family was already a grandfather when his youngest half sibling was born, so a 23 year difference is nothing!

ok, i think of john in 1851: HO107 piece 2171 folio 438 page 44 in rowton, cheshire

                all born rowton:

                Brown, John-Head. Married. 53, b.1798. a Lab Stone Delf
Brown, Ann- Wife. married. 64, b.1787
Brown, Daniel- Son, Unmarried. 25, b.1826. Agricultural Lab
Brown, Elizabeth- Daughter. Unmarried. 21 b.1830
Brown, John- Son. Unmarried. 19, b.1832. Agricultural Lab
                Brown, Ann- Daughter,Unmarried. 17 b.1834

is it possible your elizabeth brown is john snr's sister, and therfore henry's grand aunt?

                  Hey Kyle

I was thinking perhaps that could be the case as it would fit alot better,

I have Henry's birth cert now and it states his father was William Brown a Cordwainer and Mary Brown nee Hennesey.
