  • Dedham, Essex in the 1870s

Was there more than one Dedham in Essex?

Maud Ethel South was born in q4 1877 in Lexden district (vol 4a page 395).

In 1881 the family is at Spurlings Lane, Grove Farm Dedham in the Lexden rural sanitary district (RG11 Piece 1800 Folio 58 Page 16). Lexden is now in the southern suburbs of Colchester. Father William is a coachman (domestic).

In 1891 the family, with some new children but no father (Head of family Hannah says she is married) is at Wignall Street, Lawford, Essex, which is just south of Manningtree. RG12 Piece 1405 Folio 104 Page 11.

In 1881 and 1891 the eldest 5 children are all shown as born Dedham. But "the" Dedham of John Constable is several miles north of Colchester and unlikely to be in the Lexden RSD.

    So what's going on?

    Hi Uncle John
Dedham does come under the Lexden registration district.

That's OK then. Thanks for the clarification, Moggie.
