  • Medal Cards

Hi I've just got hold of my G.fathers WW1 medal card only to find it blank

I know he had medals because they were stolen when I was a kid and anyway he'd have the victory medal at least wouldn't he ?
He was injured twice - gas and shrapnel - but went back both times so was in for the duration. Did you get campaign awards as well or only bravery awards ??

Main point has anyone found Army records so inaccurate

The standard allocation of 3 medals, which nearly everyone got, was known as Tom, Dick and Harry, from a cartoon strip of the time.

    EDIT: Pip, Sqeak and Wilfred.

      Thanks Uncle John

So How come the record card is blank ???!
The cards either side are filled in .................
I've just noticed he's down as Private - Since I've got his Officers Dress Sporran thats wrong too !! He was made up to Captain in the field , which as far as I can see meant they'd run out of officers, and came back for training for 3 months or so hmmmmmmmmmmm
Its definitely him tho ....... I thought the Army was supposed to be efficient !!!

Have you checked to see if there is another medal card for him?

I stand corrected. That's what I meant to put but the computer garbled it.

Uncle John - nice try but its an age thing I've stopped worrying about it and am trying to cultivate the eccentric rather than senile image !!

Elaine - OK now I feel dopey , more than one card ?? if so it didn't come up on the search.............

His name was Sidney Herbert Lees

How is he recorded on Ancestry - Sidney Lees or Sidney Herbert Lees.
Which regiment was he in or do you have his regimental number ... I can't see a blank medal card!

His number is I think 357800 (from the card) Its actually written on the back of the Sporrans come to think of it so I can check .

He was in the Kings Liverpool Regiment (Liverpool Scottish)

On the NA He's down as Sidney H Lees

I'm not on Ancestry any more so if you could check ...................... Cheeky but hopefully winning smile (doesn't seem to be covered by the emoticons !!)

                  Thanks for the interest

I have the correct card on Ancestry. PM me with your email address and I'll send it.

                      scuda

Oh, I see it's the last one Val has listed. It must be the right one from the information you've given. It's not blank, but it does say he's a Private.

Scuda OK blank might have been an over simplification but it doesn't give any medal details and any way is largely illegible !!

I've been trying to add a picture of the card but so far ................... :((

This medal card is a little odd - I'd suggest asking about it on the more specialised Great War Forum - the ref erence on the right hand side "On P?F roll" and then the references suggests his entitlement was recorded on another Medal Roll for some reason - but can't think what P?F refers to. There may well have been another card for him that for some reason hsn't survived or has possibly been mistranscribed - either by NA or Ancestry - or both

What this medal card does confirm is that he was in the 10th Battalion (Scottish) a Territorial Regiment - his 6 figure umber is one allocated to them - but it suggests he didn't go overseas (what the medal card reflects - service overseas) until after the renumbering of the TF from 4 digit numbers to 6 in 1917. The fact there is a reference on the back of the card supporting his entitlement to a 1914/15 Star(meaning he went overseas initially before the beginning of 1916) suggests again possibly there was another card somewhere which may have recorded his old 4 digit number and his initial date of entry

If he was commisioned he should have an Officers File at the NA - not on Ancestry - and this could be ithe reference for it -

The official archive of the UK government. Our vision is to lead and transform information management, guarantee the survival of today's information for tomorrow and bring history to life for everyone.

Also as an officer - he would have had to apply for his medals rather than have them automatically issued as happened for the lower ranks - perhaps that might be an explanation for the missing? card - he went overseas as a Private this card records that entitlelment but they were issued against another one??

Hope this helps a little - and try to remember the Army wasn't neccesarily inefficient - the pen pushing and paperwork that would have gone on behind the scenes during and after this huge mobilisation of men must have been awesome - in a way I'm surprised so much has survived

                          Cheers
                          Sue

                            Thanks for all the help

The NA download I got (paid for) doesn't show the reverse of the card irritatingly - if you could email me a copy english Bob I'd be grateful.
As far as I know he didn't join up until 1916 I'll double check that but I'm pretty sure I'm right . I know he managed to miss the most devastating battles of the Somme and Ypres due to injury and Officer training but fought at both. I'll check the Officer files Sue mentioned and see if there is more info there........... I have 2 photos of him in Uniform 1 whilst at hospital convalescing from a leg injury he isn't wearing any insignia on that and the other is a formal one of him as a Captain but during service so I've no record of the medals he received.

I still haven't figured out how to put a photo up on here but I could do with help deciphering what little info there is on the card

                            Thanks again everyone

You need to create an account (free) on a site such as Photobucket and then upload the image there at the highest resolution. You then get several options, one of which is a link location, which you then copy and paste into your message here. I managed it so I'm sure you will.
