  • Help needed please to find a POW WWII relative

    Hi
    I have found a photo/postcard of a relative who was a POW.

    The photo shows a group of POW's unpacking Red Cross crates/parcels outside a row of wooden huts.
    On the back it is written out like a post card.

    On the right is give the address it is to be sent to, on the left it says;

    KRIEGSGEFANGENEN POST
    GEBUHRENFREI

    ZUNAME: G BORRETT 005
    1 KOF B.A.B.20
    HEYDEBRECK 0/55
    GERMANY

    It then has two official stamps on it, one in black ink which says;
    Kgf.B.A.B.20
    3
    Gepruft

    the second is in red ink and has a picture of a crown and says;
    PASSED
    P.W.341

    I believe G.Borrett to be my Great-grandmothers brother;
    George Henry Borrett
    Born in Sevenoaks, Kent
    4/8/1917

    I can't find a marriage or death certificate for him so I am not sure if he made it out or died in the camp.
    I'm afraid I don't know what regiment he was in on what rank he held.

    If anyone can shed any light on this I would be very grateful

    Thanks

    Ancestry has a WW2 database for Prisoners of War - have found this entry

    G. H. Borrett
    Rank - Private
    Army Number - 6344401
    Regiment - Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment
    POW Number - 10983

    Camp Type - Miscellaneous Establishments
    Camp Number - BAB 20
    Camp Location - Kedzierzyn-Kozle, Poland

    Record Office
    Infantry and Army Physical Training Corps Record Office, Stanwell Road School, Ashford, Middlesex
    Record Office Number - 23

    Might be worth contacting the Record Office at Ashford to see if they can provide further information.

          Wow! Thank you, I will look into all that.
          Thanks so much for taking the time to help me.

          Do you think he could have been moved? Your findings say the camp was in Poland but the address on the card give Heydebreck, Germany. I wonder if its the same person?

            Just been googling, looking through POW sites - quite a few comments about being moved from one POW camp to another, so yes it's possibly the same person.

              I live near to Stanwell Road Ashford and am pretty sure the Army office no longer exists.

              There might be a POW questionnaire for him at Kew - not online though.
