  • Vines family Roydon Essex

I have successfully traced my family back to about 1800 in Roydon, but cannot get any further. Can anyone advise me on how to get past the barrier.
Thomas Vines, my ancester was a Victualler (or Innkeeper) and we have gone through the local Parish Records for St. Peter's Church where we have found many members of the family. However, Thomas seems to have a close connection in the church as his name appears on many records as a witness, but we cannot find any information on his birth location or his marriage. Based on childrens ages he would have been born about 1750. There appears to be a family connection with The White Hart but can't find if he was the licensee as records only show back to 1854 and the brewery ownership changed in recent years. Appreciate any help here to go back earlier.

Hi - have you been able to find anything in here? http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_de...ce=TS%20367/31
COPIES OF LICENSED VICTUALLERS' RECOGNIZANCES - 1800 - althought it might just relate to the Southend area -

There might also be something in here http://www.british-history.ac.uk/rep...x?compid=63857

Hello naomitt, thank you for your advice, from this I have now been able to ascertain that Thomas Vines was licensee of the New Inn, in Roydon apparently from its opening in 1785 until at least 1820 when he would have been about 70.

Roydon is close to the Waltham Abbey area and there are Vines on the IGI there between 1741 and 1774 (all female as far as I can see).
Also have Vines on the 1841 census in Waltham Abbey, so there could be a connection here?

Another thought is Roydon is on the border of Herts and Essex, (A414 acts as the border), if he were born in Stansted abbots, he would have been in Hertfordshire.
County Hall in hertford has a family research center (Peggs Lane Hertford)

              Vines Family in Roydon

              Hello Trevor,
Many thanks for those ideas, however I have tried on IGI and just cannot access any Vines in Waltham Abbey - is there something that I am missing. Can you give me any more information on how to see this please. As you say, WA is quite close and could be what I am looking for.
Family were definitely in Stanstead Abbotts around 1850 but not at the earlier time so far as I can see.

                On IGI
                Batch number I039623

21st June 1741 Mary Vines baptised in Waltham Abbey; parents Thomas and Hannah Vines
26th June 1771 Sarah Vines baptised; parents Willliam and sarah Vines

                Batch number I039624

14th Aug 1774 Hannah Vines baptised; parents William and Sarah Vines
24th Jan 1776 Mildred Vines baptised; parents William and Sarah Vines

I made an error re Waltham Abbey.
Waltham Abbey is in Essex, nearby Waltham Cross is in Hertfordshire.

                Also considering the area
                Ware/Gt Amwell
11 OCT 1640 Rue Vine baptised; mother Ann Vine (Gt Amwell will have been St John The Baptist Church).

1782 Elizabeth Vine baptised; mother Ann Vine

All speculation, but you never know.
like I said, a visit to the Peggs Lane center may be of use to you.

Hi - that's great - have you seen this photo of the New Inn -
Recorded in 1769, 'The New Inn' is an early 17th-century timber-framed building on the site of a late medieval house of which the south cross wing survives.

                  I found this site;

which mentions various bits and pieces about Roydon - in 1848 William Rodwell, victualler, New Inn
is listed....do you have that name at all?

                    Hi naomiatt,
Many thanks again for your help - yes I was aware of William Rodwell, but have found your information on sites great.
