Hi all
This is a part of my tree I haven't posted about before, as the research gods have been quite kind to me and census info etc has been quite forthcoming, but there are a few queries now that I'm struggling to answer, would anyone have a moment to have a look over it?
My G-G-Grandmother was Lucy Eliza KING (sometimes Eliza Lucy KING) and she married my G-G-Grandfather Alfred Cresswell SELWYN in St Martin's Church in Salisbury, 1892.
Her parents were Eliza BARRATT, b Semley Wiltshire c.1823 and George KING, b Donhead St Andrew Wiltshire c.1812 - his baptism was December 1812.
This was George King's second marriage, his first was to Elizabeth ??.
George King himself is the glue that holds all of the records together, and he lived at the same place in all census' from 1841 to his death in 1899, Eliza King (nee Barratt) was still living there in 1901 and 1911. It is impossible to tell from any of the census' what their actual address in Donhead St Andrew is... on most it is written as 'Over Way', on some as 'Milkwell' and nearby is 'West End Lane'. We have been to the area and these three roads all meet at one point, and it looks as though they were all bundled together a bit during the census years. There are no house numbers so we can't narrow down where their actual house was
George King's first wife Elizabeth was present with him in the 1841 and 1851 census' and their first child was born in c.1835/6. I don't know her maiden name. They had 8 children (!)
Sarah, c. 1837
James, c.1839
Alfred, c.1841
Emma, c.1843
George, c. 1846
Elizabeth, c.1850
Edwin, c.1854
Mary Ann, c. 1860/1
By the 1861 census, George was shown as a widower. However, their next door neighbours are John Barratt, 75 widower, with his daughter Eliza, 36, (born Semley, Wilts, 1823 and shown as unmarried (who, in 1866, became the next Mrs George King!!) and two grandchildren.... what I don't know is whether these grandchildren (Charlotte, 16 and Rose, 4) are anything to do with Eliza or a sibling?
Census refs:
1841: HO107; 1175; Book: 5; Civil Parish: St Andrew Donhead; County: Wiltshire; Enumeration District: 7; Folio: 14; Page: 20; Line: 4; GSU roll: 464195.
1851: HO107; 1849; 73; 15; 220996.
1861: RG9; 1320; 45; 13; 542795
1871: RG10; 1961; 41; 4; 830883.
1881: RG11; 2076; 37; 2; 1341501.
1891: RG12; 1624; 32; 2; 6096734
1901: RG13; 1960; 22; 4.
So, whilst the census information has been great in telling me that these folks were in Semley and Donhead St Andrew their whole lives (reg district would have been Tisbury), what I can't find is much more about George's first wife Elizabeth, or about second wife Eliza Barratt's life prior to marrying George. Or where they lived. Or their children. I can't find any baptisms for the children, or any marriages in the parish records for George King. I can't find anyone with any corresponding trees online.
(note I have the GRO certificate for Eliza and George's marriage in 1866 and it was definitely in the parish church of Donhead St Andrew, but a search of the parish records says there are no results for any marriage of a George King.... why?)
Not sure there are really any clear questions in this extremely long post, but I'm just hoping someone might have some information, contacts, more luck than I've had searching, or spotted some hole in my info etc.... the experts on here never cease to amaze me with what they find so I guess I'm just putting this 'out there' for anyone to work their magic if they can please ;D
Thank you in advance
Rachel
P.S. I'm also planning a trip to the Wilts History Centre, but the records they have are all online and I've not got anywhere so not sure how much I'll be able to find there but its worth trying!
(also posted on Brit-Gen forum in hope someone can help)
