  • Henry Cates b1844 Thetford, Norfolk

I have drawn a blank with this ancestor. I have found him as far back as the 1871 census, married to Eliza (born Hockham) and living in Wereham, working as a wheelwright. I think her name was Tilbrook or Tlbrooke, and they married in 1864 in Thetford. Can anyone check this on the parish registers, or suggest anywhere else to look?

Hi Mark, and welcome to FTF!

Do you just need any information at all for Henry Cates, or anything specific? I'll go off and have a look in the meantime.

                  re henry cates

Thanks everybody. So quick! I had most of the census details, but it was the earlier details (birth, marriage) I was after. I have not found anyone else with these two in their family tree. They were my grandmother Lily Cates' grandparents, and I know she was writing to some relatives in Yorkshire regularly, probably cousins.

You might want to give the Charles Burrell museum a try to see if any staff lists have survived from that period. As he was a coach builder he may well have been employed at the Burrell engineering works creating the canopies and bodywork for the traction engines. They were the major employer in Thetford and would no doubt have employed coachbuilders and allied tradesmen.

                                  Good luck with the hunt!
