  • Turning off Computer

For a few weeks, i find my computer reboots when i turn it off, i googled to see if i could find a fix, it seems there is a fault on windows. I tried the things the site suggested to no avail. I then tried another suggestion by typing some words in "run" - i followed what it said and today when i logged on, i had no front page, i went through the words the windows site told me to type in "run" and got my front page back. Plus it didnt turn off the way it used to either.

Can anyone help me to remedy this in the most "easiest" way please - i'm a real thicko when it comes to computers.

    Thank You

Have you checked it is actually set to shut down and not restart?

Hold the ON/OFF button down for about 30 seconds.

Works for me, using XP and Firefox.

This usually happens when Windows detects an error whilst shutting down. It automatically reboots to attempt to fix the problem, but it very rarely works.

The troubleshooting link posted by Trevor is your best bet, but these errors are notoriously difficult to track down. I have found the best solution is to completely re-install XP from scratch, it is usually quicker!

                          Hi Tilly,

Repeatedly using the 'forced turn off' method, will eventually lead to problems, as XP will not be closing applications that were running in the background, or deleting any temporary files it should do before shutting down.

Just carry out this to disable the “restart on system failure” feature to stop the problem, but it will not actually tell you what was causing it in the first place.
                          1. Right-click on My Computer,
                          2. click Properties,
                          3. click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,”
                          4. click Settings. Under “System Failure,”
                          5. uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”

Sometimes it helps, starting and then completing normally the computer in the protected mode (F8 button).
