  • What will I find on a parish death record for the late 1700's

I am off to the bristol records office in the next few weeks to look at some parish records.

I have seen bapt and marriage entries before - but not death records. What information is shown on these records?

    Is the age recorded?

It can vary. This section in the Wiki is useful

It's pot luck, I think. Some incumbants included ages, many didn't, in my experience. Just keep your fingers crossed that you find more than just a name for your ancestors.

Some even include cause of death - it can be quite interesting seeing the strange things which were thought to cause death in those days. Sometimes the parents (or at least the father) are included for a child.

At worst, you'll just get a name and date of burial.

At best, you'll get a name, date, age, cause of death, relationship and address!!

Sometimes at that date you don't even get a name for a woman.
          I've seen the equivalent of....
'Wife of John Smith'...and the date of burial.

I've transcribed several burial records for FreeReg, and most for that time are just a name. Lots of women are just listed as Widow Smith, for example, no first name at all.

One register I saw wrote the name extra large if it was an important local person!!!
