  • a little bit of help needed please

Albert Ernest Comley aged 56 Widower marrying in Mile End 1918 to a Lydia Rose aged 46 Spinster
He is a Food packer it says his father was Albert Comley a Grave Digger deceased
Their address are given as 16 Nicholas Street
I know nothing at all about him
does anybody know a better way to search for Alberts Deceased Wife or Albert with his Father on any Census
I would have thought Grave Digger would be easy to find
Thanks for any suggestions unless rude of course

Better than what, Val? Have you tried without success? Perhaps Comley is mistranscribed as Conley?

Wiltshire BMD (Wiltshire Births Marriages & Deaths) has some Albert COMLEY marriages in right general time-frame - but not Albert Ernest COMLEY.

hi Nell I have tried address searches just first names just surnames , I had thought that the father must have been alive when he wa born so thought he would be in 1871 or 1881 at least
By the way I trawled for your Zusman Zuzman Luzman Hart Heart art etc etc yesterday he must be badly mistranscribed good luck with him
        thanks for that Christine
just noticed on Lydias death cert it says she is the widow of Ernest Comley still a food packer

These could be the census appearances, if he had been from Marylebone (father Henry J - not promising!):
          1871 RG10; Piece: 148; Folio: 76; Page: 10
          1881 RG11; Piece: 1374; Folio: 66; Page: 59
          1891 RG12; Piece: 1060; Folio 16; Page 23

or from Wiltshire (father Fred - also not Albert):
          1871 RG10; Piece: 1925; Folio: 36; Page: 8
          1881 RG11; Piece: 2051; Folio: 32; Page: 3

Or this one in Portsmouth (father William - still not Albert) "Albert George COMELAY"" in 1871:
          1871 RG10; Piece: 1129; Folio: 15; Page: 23
          1881 RG11; Piece: 1142; Folio: 16; Page: 25
          1891 RG12; Piece: 866; Folio 63; Page 30

Nothing promising so far. Sometimes father with same name as groom is a euphemism for "father unknown", but the occupation is usually something similar to the groom's, but promoted a bit (e.g. farmer instead of ag lab); "grave digger" is a bit odd for that.

              This looks hopeful in 1881...
              RG11; Piece: 132; Folio: 62; Page: 17

But I haven't joined him onto anyone else. Albert the grave digger / sexton / gravedigger should be findable in 1881 by his occupation - but maybe he was doing something else then?
