  • Edwin BENNETT b Leicester(shire) 1834-1838

    Anyone up for a puzzle??

There are a couple of Edwin BENNETTs born in Leicestershire in the 1834 - 1838 sort of time-range.

One had parents George & Martha and was born in North Kilworth:
bap 7 Jun 1835 North Kilworth (parents George & Margaret) [LRFHS-LPCD]
    1841 HO107-598-6 fo3 p1: age 6; Lutterworth Rd, North Kilworth
1851 HO107-2078: age 15, ag lab; Harboro Rd, North Kilworth

One had parents William and Elizabeth and was born in Leicester:
    1841 HO107/605/14 fo13 p19: age 3; Applegate Street, St Nicholas, Leicester
    1851 HO107/2090 fo714 p15: age 14, factory boy; Bakehouse La, St Mary's, Leicester

    There's a death registration: 1859 q3 Loughboro' 7a-71 (no age, of course)
I can't find a North Kilworth burial on my Leics FHS CD database of parish register records (which would cover the date, I would think).

There's an Edwin BENNETT who emigrated from Leicestershire to New Zealand:
    12 Oct 1858 (London) - 21 Jan 1859 (Lyttelton): "Strathallan" age 22, Leicester, ag lab £17 (pd 50/50 by EB & Govt) [passenger-list p19 http://library.christchurch.org.nz/H...llen-1858.pdf]

m 2 Feb 1861 Lyttleton, NZ Eliza Deed PARKER [an Ancestry tree]
m 1861 Eliza STOCKTON widow [Varcoe's New Zealand Marriages Index fo 00634; a TP tree]
    apparently the same marriage

12 Jan 1883 ?"LYTTLETON, Jan 12 - Sailed - Grafton for Timaru, Lady Agnes and Edwin BENNETT for Newcastle, Sarah Pile for Greymouth, Rio Lage, for Oamaru." [WanganuiHerald, Volume XVII, Issue 4962, 13 Jan 1883, p2]

    {Eliza died Jan 1889}

d 2 Mar 1902 Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, NZ [an Ancestry tree]
    d 3 Mar 1902 [a TP tree]
bur Plot 179 Makaraka Cemetery, Ormond, Gisborne, NZ, age 64; Warrant #1454 [a TP tree]

It's reckoned that one or other of the first two is the same as the NZ Edwin. I can't find either the Leicester one or the North Kilworth one in 1861† or 1871. These Edwins aren't in my direct line, so I don't really want to be shelling out on a "maybe" death cert (the 1859 Loughboro' one).

    Any Ideas??? :conf:
The age favours the Leicester one, but the occupation favours the North Kilworth one.

    Christine

I have been through pages of Hits in FMP (male b Leicestershire 1835 ±3) - and submitted enough corrections (some multiple) while I was at it, to have generated 50 acknowledgments from FMP to my e-address today!

Christine there is an Edwin Bennett b 1838 at 15 Oxendon St. Leicester on the 1871 census. He is with wife Priscilla age 28 and sons John (?) 7, Frederick E. 2, also daughter Harriet K(?) 2. Perhaps someone with Ancestry can give you the ref I use genes.

Edited to add there is no place of birth or occupation for any of these people on the census image.

      This looks like Fredericks birth
Frederick Edward Bennett 1868 Dec Qtr Leicester 7a 217
John Frederick Bennett 1863 Dec Qtr Leicester 7a 216
Harriet Hetty Bennett 1865 Sept Qtr Leicester 7a 213

In 1881 Priscilla is a widow living at 24 Oxendon St Leicester there is also another child Anne age 9.
All born Leicester. Frederick is not with the family, John is a Dentist assistant and Priscilla and Harriet Hosiery Maker Up.

Thank you Jac. Certainly not impossible ... and it wouldn't show up on any list requiring Leicester/shire as a PoB, of course!

I've noted it down and will see what turns up.

Just so you can rule it out, there's no Edwin Bennett listed at Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester (1849-1950).

Also drawn a blank under Loughborough, Lutterworth and South Kilworth (1849-1950 - North Kilworth doesn't seem to be on the disc I have).

Thank you very much, Elaine. That's certainly helpful.

The LFHS disk I have does have burials, but I'm not sure how late they go for North Kilworth ... perhaps I should have a look!
