  • Help with USB ports please

When I use a usb port my pc freezes - I did put this in another thread but nobody answered so I am trying again.

Will just go and c&p from that thread.

I checked the device manager and the only thing with a "!" warning is:

    PCI Simple Comms controller
Location PCI slot 2 (PCI bus 0, device 10, function 0)
    Drivers not installed (code 28)

I tried to update but I couldn't find a cd (maybe the guy who built the pc has it?) and the wizard couldn't find a source.

Please does anyone know if there is something I can do rather than pay my PC guy to come out?

        Aaargh.

That fix leads me to instructions meant for people about to prepare a computer for duplication!

Does that mean someone has tried to duplicate it already?

"PCI Simple Comms controller" is most likely a dialup modem. If you don't use it (which at the moment you cant anyway), i wouldnt worry about that.

As for the usb problem, it sounds like a driver problem to me. Probably be best to get it looked at by a pro.

Which operating system do you use?
These problems with the USB drivers should be overcome after Windows XP. There were additional USB drivers 2.0 for the previous Windowsversion. Perhaps have you taken into account the BIOS adjusting of the motherboard? There is an option for the USB support at some manufacturers.
Depending on BIOS the entry is given to subgroups in different subgroups.

Hello Wolf. Thank you for your reply.

I am using XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

                  AMD Sempron 2300+, 1.58GHZ, 1.93GB of RAM.

I don't know about BIOS settings.

Today I spoke to a professional and he suggested the following.

Download & burn an ISO from ubuntu.co (9.10) - this will let me check if it is a Windows problem.

Then he suggested another 5 steps!

                  1) download and run A-Squared from emisoft
                  2) download and run SuperAntiApyware
                  3) use revounistaller to unistall AVG
                  4) install Avira AntiVir
                  5) install Agnitum Outpost

He thinks my pc is infected and will need Windows reinstalled completely!

I am not confident enough to do all this! I just want to get my files off the pc (would have used USB>external hard drive if I could).

Maybe I will have to try to format some disks to burn the files onto, and email myself the files.

I think I will email the guy who built the pc and see what he thinks. (£60 an hour!) Just wanted to get all this clear; I don't expect any suggestions at this point.

                  Thanks again.

                    Hello Jen,

if you start the computer and press removing button, this should appear to BIOS-Menue actually. Depending on BIOS (AMI, AWARD, Phönix) and version can turns on the F2 button or Esc button also open up the way to the BIOS for you.
Different folders are in the BIOS. You can push these reach over the arrow buttons and then the enter key.
There is an attitude for the use of the USB entrances here. These USB mass memories must be up "on" in the BIOS. (Plus or minus - buttons is carried out the change via her/.)
The USB Stick was interpret like a hard disk.
Starting protecting and the computer with the F10 button after change of the BIOS values newly.
                    Wolf

                    P.S.
The Accu also can have got weak on the motherboard at the computer. If you take the computer of the net, the Accu will keep the BIOS values under normal circumstances for one month. After that the BIOS goes in the level type value. So it can use to happen at weak Accu, too. The Accu can be replaced here when required. It is a button cell. The a little bigger than into watch one.

Jen, does it freeze if you plug in any USB device, or just one specific device..

For example, are your keyboard / mouse usb devices ??

I have to admit a degree of bewilderment at the steps you have been given to take, as they appear to be asking you to install multiple antivirus / antispyware products, a move which is generally regarded as 'asking for trouble'..

Whilst downloading ubuntu may allow you to identify if the problem is windows related, it will only do so if you know what you are looking for.. It is a solution a professional might use themselves, but not something I would suggest that the average user would try..

USB problems can often be cured by un-installing all the USB devices in Device Manager. Right click and "un-install" every one then re-start Windows.
Windows should say "new hardware" etc and re-install them.

This works often even if Windows says they are working properly.

Linux CDs like Ubuntu/Mint are very good for Windows users. They boot to a live system running from the CD and don't install anything. If the USB ports are working from a live CD shows that it is a Windows problem, not a hardware one.

They can also get your data off a non-booting Windows system.

A repair install from the XP disk is more drastic but hopefully won't be needed.

                          Thanks, you three.

I haven't had much chance to read your replies properly but I just wanted to acknowledge your input.

Briefly though, the freezing started with my Kodak all in one and I thought that was the problem (firmware or software) - it works fine with OH's laptop.

Then I tried to put some photos on - when the camera was plugged into the usb the pc froze too. Then I tried a memory stick and that also froze the pc.

                          So it's not specific devices.

I will be back when I get more than 10 minutes of free time! Thanks again.

The memory of the Camera and this one memory-stick be interpreted by the computer as a mass memory.
A mouse, printer or one WLAN embroider no mass memories are against this!
Which USB socket do you use? It can come to wrong hardware connections on the mother circuit board in the front case. A 10-pole plug with only 9 lines or 2 plugs with 4 and 5 are told here perhaps wrongly on the mother circuit board to lines. A short circuit arises from it at an attached device.
Then try to test the back USB sockets. The BIOS attitudes do not then check if a USB mouse works and the loft, please. You can look at all values of the BIOS. No-one afraid! Without protecting and exit (F10 button) nothing happens at the attitudes at all.
