He would have been my Great Grandfather.

Where was George born? I don't understand your reference - is the military record on ancestry?
Have you looked at the images for the record you have found?

      Hi,
Does the marriage cert state that they were 21 or over 21? There are no births on FreeBMD for a George Farnell between Dec 1872 and Mar 1876
However on the 1871 Census I have found the following family

      RG10/3179/F47/p25
!6 Bond Street, Holy Trinity, Coventry

Francis Farnell 36 Head Joiner Alton, Staffs
      Sarah Farnell 39 Wife London
Edward 15 Son Brass Finisher App. Coventry
      Francis 12 Son Coventry
      Charles 10 Son Coventry
      Emily 8 Dau Coventry
      Frances 6 Dau Coventry
      George B 3 Son Coventry
      Winifred M 1 Dau Coventry

In 1881 the family are still at the same address and have had another son Ambrose born 1873

      George Farnell birth ref
      Dec 1867 Coventry vol 6d p 425

Francis and Sarah died within two years of each other
      Francis aged 53 Jun 1887 Coventry vol 6d p 288
      Sarah aged 53 Dec 1885 Coventry vol 6d p 281

Susan Leah J Roberts birth ref
      Jun 1875 Exeter vol 5b p 79

You say that George Farnell may have been your gt grandfather. Do you have your grandfather's birth certificate as this would confirm the names of his parents and the maiden name of his mother.

Hello everyone, thanks for helping out, I am afraid i have not been able to pin down a birth place for George, there are so many (Ancestry/IGI etc.) especially in the north and midlands that could be possibles. The marriage cert 1895 states that both were 21yrs, he could have been telling lies, guessing or simply didn't know! If the Coventry family are possibles he would have been 28yrs when married not 21 hhhmmmm! I like this family though because looking for clues George had younger sisters Emily and Frances, George and wife had two daughters, Emily M S b.1895 and Frances A T b.1896, Frances is my grandmother(mothers side) 1901 census living with mother and grandparents, is this because George was out in South Africa, Boer war 1899-? Not quite sure which direction to head in now , so questions ask away , suggestions gratefully received ,

        Rob.
