  • Church Monumental Inscriptions

I have a problem with one family of silversmiths Two of them at least were buried in St Michael, Wood Street, City of London and a big monumental inscription was in the church nave. But some unkind soul demolished the church in 1897 ! I've seen a brief reference to this George Smith's monument in a post war book, but where they got their information from is unknow. I really need to find a record of the full inscription.
Does anyone know of a source for such material ?
It's quite tantalising as another familly of silvermiths, the Hougham's have a vast monument in St Botolphs without, Aldersgate , which gives virtually their entire history !

Try contacting the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. They have a very helpful archivist.

Many thanks - I agree your comment on David Beasley - he's one of the best ! Goldsmith's Hall are always very helpful and their records are superb.
Especially the apprentice records which are very well indexed.
      But not on momuments !

I contacted an archivist once about an old chapel in Herts, and the info was very good.
They might have some ideas for you.

If you could track down which Family History Society covered the church you might find they have list of Monuemntal Inscriptions.
