James Martin born 1822 North Tawton, Devon is in Deptford, Kent from 1861 to 1891 censuses.

In 1861 (RG9 396 147 12) he's a labourer

In 1871 (RG10 745 61 9) he's doing something in Deptford victualling yard - any idea what?

In 1881 he's back to being a labourer and in 1891 he's a civil pensioner.

I cant even find him in 1871 where does it say he comes from on that one Uncle John

Do you mean Robert Martin? He is down as (I think) Leading man of Labourers in Deptford victualling yard.
