First impression Samuel. But then I looked again and it might be James but you need to compare with other writing on the page to be sure....

              No not really.

Its Samuel I think its quite clear the surname could be misread though.

                    Yes very easily.
If the image was being viewed on a microfiche reader or even as a digitised image the equipment used could easily allow a mis-transcription of the image.

I use two modern digital monitors on my computer at home and flicking the image between the two displays a big difference in clarity.
                    Cheers

If he has a wife Harriet and a 1 year old daughter Sarah on 1841 census then it is Samuel as the S is the same as Sarah.

hmmn as I understand it, the 1841 cens was a schedule filled in by the householder and then handed to whoever (enumerator?) for them to be 'transcribed' into books?

the reason I ask is that on my other thread, I can't find Samuel/Ann Holmes and their son Joseph on the 1841 (but they are on the 1851 etc..) and I have found a baptism for him with father Samuel.

I am used to transcribing so knew what the name said, but, someone that isnt, (and I asked Tim, he said James!!)

EDIT: this is my other thread..

The J for John further down the page is different so it can't be James.

I initially thought James and then realised it was too long.

I too am a transcriber, and you should look at the whole text to compare how the person writes their letters.

                                        HI

                                        Just for REF only

Copied this over from my reply to your other thread

The 1851 that you've got for Samuel, Ann and son James Holmes with his Mother Mary with them they are living next dor to a Thomas Cutter age 33 Collier

Well on the 1841 Samuel has become James they are livng in exactly the same place as the above '51 census still next door to Thomas
