                  Drat - I had my hopes up for a second or two there! My GGF was a licensed hawker and also a licensed lodging house keeper. If records had been kept, I might have got the missing link that would confirm who I think his parents were. Ah well...

                        Offshot...might be something in here...if you enter boarding house for example, quite a few are listed

                          thanks for that naomiatt. I've found him in some of the later ones at 41 Watergate Street as per the censuses but there's nothing for 1871 which is when he had the lodging house. There's loads of stuff in there about the district which will be a great help to me for the geography.
