Nurse Child

following a family on the census through the years and in 1871 theres mum,dad and the two daughters but also a child of age 3 with a different last name and the relation is "nurse child"
what is a nurse child?

I have a few of those they are usually being looked after by another family for a variety of reasons maybe the mother had died ??? etc etc
