  • any ideas please im stuck

Hi I have been at my husbands family his great nan was born 1896 deptford
father is john thorton a harness maker and mother is jane thornton late acus formley conlay

so i then found the marriage of jane acus to john thornton they married in 1910 he was 67 a widow she was 56 a widow johns occupation was a saddler

Johns father on the marriage certificate was also a john thornton he was deceased and a shoemaker

i found them on the 1911 census in the column where it has children
born alive and died jane has filled in under johns name his his his and also written that alice was illegitamate

I have searched the 1901 census looking for alice jane and john but just can not find them if alice was born in 1896 i thought she would be with her mum?

Any ideas where to look now ?
the only other piece of info i have is that on the 1911 census it says that john was born in preston lancashire

    Thanks for any ideas

Can you give the reference of the 1911 census - I can´t see the family you are referring to!

This actually says Nil - Nil - Nil (not his, his, his!)

I´ll see if I can find them in 1901.

This could be Alice and mother Jane in 1901

              - Ancestry.co.uk

Name has been transcribed as Anes, but if you look at the image it looks like Aucs - which is fairly close to Acus (Jane's name before she married John Thornton.

Just realised that the 1901 census I have given you is probably the right one as John Thornton is listed there as well.

It looks as if Jane recorded her and the children as Acus on the 1901 census - as she was not legally married to John at the time. Hence Alice being recorded as illegitimate in the 1911 - in that she was born before they were married!

I would think that the Alfred Acus that was in an institution in 1901 is probably yours - I can´t see anyone else with that name.
By 1911 he seems to be in the military in India.

Well the institution in the 1901 census is described as South Metropolitan District Schools - so education/learning a trade ... or possibly part of the workhouse! (see link on next post)
