On freeBMD - FreeBMD Home Page
    Click on Information
Click on Districts (under Coverage Charts heading)
Then under the District to Volume Mappings there are options to view Districts and volume/page numbers allocated.

Even though Ancestry has given the area as N.Yorkshire, have they not given a registration district.
What entry are you looking at?

What date are you inquiring about?
North Yorkshire, as an area is relatively recent - it used to be North Riding of Yorkshire.
Also North Yorkshire covers a bigger area than the North Riding used to do.

Can't see anywhere when the district of North Yorkshire came into existence, or which parishes it covers.
Hopefully someone with more local knowledge may be able to help.

Found this - but there is a question mark next to date.

2000? In both North Yorkshire and Bedfordshire, the County Councils recently amalgamated all the registration districts within their county to form one registration district for the county, named North Yorkshire and Bedfordshire, respectively.

Right, 650 is the North Yorkshire reg district

Hopefully this link will show you how huge it is!

I can't find anything which gives a breakdown of the area codes, but this link

North Yorkshire County Council : Death - registering

              shows all the district offices.
I would phone or mail one of them and ask which district is 10

I don't think North Yorkshire and Bedfordshire have ever amalgamated with each other, LOL
                ETA - sorry I misread Elaine's post!

I think what it probably means is that each of them amalgamated different areas within themselves to form one centralised region for that county.

Ancestry have certainly got their counties "wrong" for some years - according to them, I was born a "Southerner". I am a tyke and proud of it:Big Grin:

For some other years they decided to amalgamate 3 different counties, but I can't remember the details off hand.

Right, apparently the number 10 had thrown the poor lady into orbit as the sub-districts are all categorised by letters and not numbers. The kind lady at Harrogate even looked the death up online for me, as they have all the North Yorks records on computer at Harrogate, but she couldnt find the death registration on her records?? Have Ancestry got it wrong??..........the only thing she did add was that the register O4 (letter not a zero) indicates it should be Selby..............so im not sure if im any further forward............grrrrr

That Ancestry entry shows the subdistrict as 1(number) and O (the letter) if you compare the O with the 0 in 2003.

Not sure if that helps at all

That's interesting - I would never have considered the Selby area as being in North Yorkshire, if I'd been forced to guess which "old" areas had been incorporated!

Selby was, I think, in the East Riding, but there was a major shift of boundaries when the Ridings were abolished. The People's Republic of South Yorkshire mopped up a lot.
