    I have not seen this on one before is it unusual ???

    Not heard of it as a registration district. Where have you found the reference to it?

      I think it was an East London Workhouse.
      Those who were seen dancing, were thought to be insane, by those who could not hear the music.

        you know the bit where it says registration district on the left of the cert ?? the name is in the middle I did wonder about a workhouse ?

          It would be the Whitechapel workhouse OH's great great grandfather aged 8 and his brother aged 12 was in there on the 1841 census

          It would have been known as Whitechapel Union Workhouse.

                If its in the section for Registration district, or sub district it would refer to the whole area covered by the Whitechapel poor law union, not just the union workhouse.

                  my ancestor was born in 1859, district was 'reeth union', but the indexes only gave 'reeth'. is this the same thing?
