  • Trying to track a 1901 census record

Hi, I am looking for William & Kate Iles in the 1901 census records

    Here they are in 1891.

    - Ancestry.co.uk

I did find this record which looked good but the mother is Mary B Iles and not Kate.

    - Ancestry.co.uk

    Anyone got any ideas?

I would say you have the right family as the address is the same.
Have you checked for a possible death for Kate and a remarriage to Mary?

I was not able to find a death entry for Kate.

I looked in the 1911 census and Mary is still alive - says she has been married for 18 years - but no husband listed at address.

Kate & Mary both come from Taunton and are both Taileress occupations.

A search for marriages of William and Mary or Kate both failed.

      Its all very odd!

If they had been married 18 years in 1911 that would indicate a marriage around 1893.

What about looking at this one from freeBMD.

        Marriages Mar 1893
        Golding Fred
        Iles William
        Slee Mary Bell
        Wiltshire Martha Mercy
        Keynsham 5c 870

Might be worth seeing if you can pair off Fred Golding and Martha, which would leave William and Mary Bell Slee.
See if you can trace a Mary Bell Slee back to see if her place/birth year match your census info.

There is a birth registration for a Mary Bell Ling Slee in Mar 1860 - reg.district Taunton. - can't remember your original info - does that match?

Just checked the 1911 census - and see she is recorded as Mary Belle Iles - so looks as if that's the right one! :smilee:

All you need now is a death for Kate! :F
