In 1855 he is sentenced to 4 years penal servitude, but where was Portland Gaol ? There was one here in Victoria Australia, could that be where he was sent ?

The newspaper report for the 1861 sentance says he is a returned transport.

Can any one help find him being transported in 1855 please

For info - Portland Gaol is in Dorset.
Opened in 1848 and held convict adults until 1921 then converted into a Borstal. Since 1988 has been a Young Offender Institution, housing men between the age of 18 and 21.

Do you have any newspaper reports relating to his sentences?

Edit - sorry didn't read your original post properly - found the 30 Nov 1860 report but see you already have it.

I have the one from 1861, which is quite long, there were 3 of them sentenced for attacking a man, at the end it says, The prisoner Bland had served a term of imprisonment for manslaughter, Calladine is a returned transport and Harper is a notorious charactor.

Not keeping very good company was he.

I can see a comment in the newspaper about him being apprehended carrying burglar's equipment - relates to the 1855 crime - but no details of the trial.
If you haven't got it then send me your email addy and I'll forward it.
