  • What is the correct spelling of the surname in this census record

What is the surename of Frederick & Martha?

Its shown as either Sarner or Lorner - but I can find no matches for this in other census records.

    Any ideas?

      I'd say Sarner..

if you compare the S of Sarner with SON (as described above head of household) you will see what I mean, if it was 'L' if you lookup up the image where that family is there is a IDA LONG, you can compare the letters again, So I think it is Sarner.. :smilee:

its just a matter of getting your 'eye in' and comparing the letters :smilee:

      EDIT:

Though it does rather depend on how the name looked from the enumerators books to getting tranferred to the actual returns.

There is a birth registration (on freeBMD) for a Jemima Lorner in 1864 in Bristol, which matches info on the census.
Might be worth seeing if you can find a suitable registration for the other children under that name.
Can't see a marriage registration at the moment!

1861 is Lamer! .. although it could be Lorner if you look at image.

My first instinct is Sarner, but looking at the L in labourer (schedule no. 184), it might be Larner.

1881 looks like Lorner to me, and 1861 looks like Larner.

thanks, Emma and Kate seem to have birth entries under the name LARNER and ellen & Minnie have entries under LORNER.

So its all a bit odd.

I wanted to see if I could find the marriage between Frederick & Martha so I can confirm her mother's maiden name is Holbrook - but all the searches I have done in freeBMD have failed.

Could this be a their marriage? There's only 1 digit difference, so maybe the 6 in 364 is a mistranscription?

                Marriages Mar 1857
Larner Frederick Merthyr Tydfil 11a 364

                Marriages Mar 1857
Green Charlotte Grant Merthyr Tydfil 11a 354
Holbrook Martha Merthyr Tydfil 11a 354
Jones David Merthyr Tydfil 11a 354

I've just had a look at the image on FreeBMD for Frederick Larner. It's very faint and difficult to read, and it does look like the 6 might be a 5.

You could also confirm Martha's maiden name by ordering one of the children's birth certificates. :smilee:
