Can't access Windows site or AVG.

Please can anyone help me? I've had problems with my laptop and getting online and in an effort to sort out have saved most things onto an external hard drive. I re-installed Windows XP but have been unable to get onto Microsoft, Windows and AVG websites. There is obviously something 'residing' on my hard drive but I can't access the websites I need to remove it. Anyone have any advice?:(
BTW, I managed to update Internet Explorer by downloading the Google IE.

not really sure if this would help have you tried a system restore
