  • Croydon in LMA?

I don't yet have access to the LMA records on Ancestry, and was wondering if they went out as far as Croydon - Elsie May Barnett was born in Croydon in 1901, and I would be very interested in knowing who her parents were, as in 1911 she was living with my OH's grandmother, listed as niece.

I don't know exactly as I don't recognize her parents names, and we've never had any family from Isle of Wight. However it's really interesting that her father is in the police, as a family story is that OH's great grandfather was in the police and got thrown out for throwing someone in the river - something we've never been able to substantiate, but we do have an old truncheon that was supposedly his.... Definitely needs further info.

Elaine - I think that one is a possible as our Barnetts came from Westerham. However, I'm stumped as to why she came to live with her relatives in Eastbourne. She died there when she was sixteen, so I have no proof yet as to who her parents were.

She was with Albert and Rosanna Barnett in Eastbourne in 1911 - I'm actually hoping to see the 1911 census tomorrow, so may be able to find out more then.

Croydon didn't become part of Greater London until 1965.

Well I'm now back armed to the teeth with copies from the 1911 census to go through, and for Elsie May in 1911 it says she was born in Sydenham Kent. On BMD there is an entry for an Elsie May Barnett born Jun 1900 in Woolwich - would Woolwich cover Sydenham? Could someone have a quick peek on the LMA records to see if there is a baptism record for her, and if so who her parents were.

                  Manny thanks,

Sydenham appears to come under the Lewisham registration district.

Thanks for looking Elaine. I think she is the one born in Croydon, as that seems to match up with parents William and Elizabeth. I have now traced William back and he is first cousin to Albert, the one who took her in, so they would probably have called her niece. Also I managed to get a copy of Alberts wedding certificate today and William was one of the witnesses, so they could have been quite close.

                          Many thanks again
