  • Help deciphering writing please?

I have a death cert and I am having trouble reading the when and where died.
The cause of death was 'Accidentally falling into the river (looks like Noth) in a state of intoxication.

There is a lot of writing in the when and where died section. I have managed to read the first few words - it says - Probably the 25th February. Last seen living about 10.00pm that night near by .................

I have to go for the rest of the evening now, so not ignoring anyone, but any help would be much appreciated.

All I can add is I think I can read "[end of 7th line] the river [8th line] the dead body then"

Sorry not to be more helpful - it took a long look last night and again this morning. What a poser.

Thank you Elaine :smilee: I think that last bit helps because, looking at the when/where registered it looks like May 22nd. I wonder how on earth they identified him if he was in the river for 3 months YUK.

Ooh, I was just checking that date again as it occurred to me it was a long time for the body to be found. Just added a question mark next to it - maybe it is right after all!

We're nearly there Chrissie - will keep trying for the last few words.

Probably 25th February. Last seen living about 10pm that night near by the D[?] on the River Nith, at Whitesands [?] [?] where it is supposed he fell into the river. His dead body was found [?] [?] opposite Gibbonhill Farm, parish of Troqueer, Stewartry of Kirkcudbright on 7th May 1903. No fixed residence.

Presume you know that Whitesands is the name of the street fronting the River Nith in Dumfries. Troqueer is south (downstream) of Dumfries. Gibbonhill farm is marked on the 50,000 map. It is about 5 or 6 miles south and fronts the river in an extensive area of marsh. The river is tidal at this point, about 8 miles from where it enters the Solway.

Could it be "near by the Docks on the River Nith" ?

And maybe "by the causeway opposite" ??

                            Roger

                            Afterthought: and "Whitesands Dumfries?"

Now I just need to put all that together :Big Grin:

Galloway Lass has been brilliant. She has found things from newspapers about him as well. A big thank you to her :smilee:

now that's a good possibility... The Nith is tidal and shipping used to come right up. The Whitesands and what is now known as the Dock Park are either side of today's St. Michael's Bridge. If he was heading back from town to Castledykes then he would be walking that way. The Sheriff Court is half way up Buccleuch Street which meets the upper end of the Whitesands. But between the start of the Sands and the end of the Dock Park there were numerous pubs and drinking dens.

I'll look again tomorrow as we gave up yesterday, the collective brains were drained
