  • Am I on the right track?

As some of you will recall I have been searching for a marriage between Annie Norman b c1859 Ireland and James Andrews b 1853 Oldham from 1891 - 1901 with no luck.

I have James Andrew(s) on census 1861, 1871, 1881(clogger), 1891 (an iron turner? still single and living with widowed father in Chadderton) and 1901 (clogger) with wife Anne mn Norman and baby son James b 28 Feb 1901 in Burnley. Mother's name on birth certificate Anne Andrews formerly Norman.

    1891 Census - James Andrews - RG12; Piece: 3317; Folio 82; Page 39
    1901 Census - James Andrews - RG13; Piece: 3861; Folio: 120; Page: 13.

    .................................................. .................................................. ..........

In the 1891 Census the only Annie Norman b c1859 Ireland is married to Frank Norman b1861 Oadby in Leics. Her maiden name is Bresland.

So then I start looking for a Frank and Annie Norman in the 1901 Census but cannot find them. Have they died, emigrated etc I don't know.

I then find the death of a Frank Norman in 1908 and send for the certificate. It is registered by his step-son J Ashby. Goes back to the 1901 census and find a Frank Ashby born Leicester with wife Sarah and youngest child Frank Ashby age 3. Look up freebdm and Frank is registered as Frank Norman b Sept qtr 1897 Prestwich.

    1901 Census Frank Ashby ?Norman - RG13; Piece: 3758; Folio: 10; Page: 12

Return to 1891 Census for Sarah Ashby and she's a widow with the older children
    RG12; Piece: 3229; Folio 80; Page 15

By 1911 Sarah is a widow again and now calling herself Sarah Norman.

Go back to freebdm and find a marriage in 1906 between Frank Norman and Sarah Sherman Ashby in Ashton, Lancs.

Could it be that Frank is now divorced, his wife Annie died, or just a coincidence???

    .................................................. .................................................. ................

In 1911 Annie Andrews is living in Salford with her son - she's down as Head but says she's married. In 1915 on her death certificate it says she's 65 not 56 and the widow of James Andrews, clogger (correct) but I haven't been able to find a death for him or in the 1911 census.

Now do you think that this Annie Norman is one and the same who supposedly married James Andrews? Or am I just clutching at straws?

    Any thoughts please.
