  • Can't find a marriage - ahhhh

    I am looking for the marriage details of;

William John Milsom - Born June 1853 in Bedminster, Bristol and Eliza Phillips - Born abt 1853 in Bawnmar, Brecon, Wales.

They had their 1st child in 1876

So I think they must have been married between 1871 and 1875 - I think closer to 75.

They settled in Bedminster so I think marriage may have been in that neck of the woods.

    Any help appreciated.

    thanks.

I can only find one to an Eliza Jones in 1873 in the Swansea district.

Can I ask, did you get Eliza's name from one of the children's birth certs?

Hi, Eliza Phillips is Eliza Milsom's mother according to the 1901 census entry when she was living with her daughter - so I am assuming that Eliza Milsom's maiden name is phillips.

Why the mother called her daughter the same name as herself I do not know.

      thanks.

Ah, so you haven't traced Eliza back before the marriage?

Well children were often named after their parents and they also used a tiny pool of names. So you get a lot of people in the same family with the same names. I have the same name as my sister-in-law for example.

Eliza junior's mother may have married more than once.

I have found a William and Eliza Milsom on the 1871 Census in Bristol, aged 20 and 21 respectively.

            - Ancestry.co.uk

If these are your couple they married by the census date, so earlier than you thought.

I keep coming back to this marriage, but the date is very tight:

              Eliza George
              and William Milsom
              June 1870 Bristol

(Anne Milsom married Thomas Williams in this quarter too)

Perhaps Eliza Philips had married twice and could have been Eliza George before??

If you get the birth certificate of one of William and Eliza's children, it will give you Eliza's maiden name

Have you got William Milsom on the census with his family in 1871?
We need to establish if the 1871 census is the correct William and Eliza.

Eliza's place of birth is different to the one in 1901.

                  :(

There is also this marriage Elizabeth so, maybe Eliza senior could have been a Jones originally
