  • Female occupation 1911 Census: "shinster chasing"?

I have two married women in their 20s and 30s doing this occupation, though the person who filled it in only adds "worker" in column 12 for the latter. Both are living in the East End of London.

I might have the second letter wrong - the tail drops below the line, but it's no 'g' or 'y'.

Any suggestions on how I find what this occupation was are most welcome.

    Cheers

No idea what it could be.
Can you scan the relevant part of the census page so we can see it?

A letter like an h with a tail below the line is a p... but that gives a singularly bizarre result!

An educated guess would be that as these ladies lived in the east end they were working in the tailoring industry, some worked at home or others in sweat shops, anybody know anything about tailoring?

I associate the word "chasing" with engraving.

Can we have a ref for the image please, so we can all look!

OC - it's on the 1911 so it'll cost you!

I wondered if it might be a badly mistranscribed "silver chasing".

I'd go with Spinster chaser - if only I'd known you could get paid for the occupation ;)

                      Thanks everybody.

Column 11 is blank for both ladies.
It could well be 'p' so 'Spinster Chasing' - the Head is Joseph Fenwick and looking at the 'p's they match.

Oh well if anyone is collecting bizarre entries on censuses, then it looks like I have a strong candidate.

                      Cheers

I guess that Seamster and Simister are phonetically very similar.

It really is worthwhile showing these dilemmas to as many people as possible.

A friend looks at it and immediately says "Spinster Charing"!

Can I accept that as the definitive meaning?

Once again, thank you everyone for your contributions.
