There's a Frederick Smith the right age in the army in 1901

BERWICK, Northumberland
RG13 piece 4845 folio 144 page 7
Place of birth just Leicester but looking at the others on page (mostly Scots) noone had a very detailed birthplace listed.

hi Judith - thanks for looking ....
I recall seeing this one but wondered how at 18 Fred was a lance corporal ??

I wonder if there is anywhere I can cross-check this e.g. army records ??

and could this be Harry, also shown as born Leicester. Is Thurmaston far from the county town? It's possible he gave name of a large place which others would have heard of rather than his own smaller parish:

HUNSLET, Yorkshire
RG13 piece 4190 folio 55 page 23
He was a driller in an iron foundry, apparently boarding with one of his work mates.

Hi Judith ... thanks again

Thurmaston is just a few miles out of Leicester. I would imagine it was a village at the time we are looking at.

Will take a look at what you've found. I suppose a foundry worker could be likened to working as a blacksmith ???
