  • lost on 1851 census

Can any of you eagle eyed people out there find Thomas and Hannah Johnson with their son Henry on the 1851 census? Thomas was born ca 1822 in Derbyshire, Hannah ca 1818 in Normanton upon Trent and Henry ca 1849 in Duffield. They seemed to move around between Nottingahm and Derby a fair bit, but I cannot find a trace of them in 1851.

    Thanks
    Linda

Found Hannah, widowed and living with married daughter Jane. Thomas died in 1877.

I have now found Hannah on the 1891 census, where she is living with another married daughter Sarah Anne Mellard. Checking back through BMD Sarah married Arthur Walter Mellard in 1870, and is with him on the 1871 and 1881 census. However in 1891 she's back with mum and Arthur seems to be living up in Lancashire with another wife and family. Is it possible to find divorce records for that period - or is something else going on here?

Done a bit more checking this morning, and it looks as though Arthur and Elizabeth married in 1908. However at the moment, I cannot find any trace of the birth of their son Ernest, or of Sarah's death. Interesting.

Divorce was practically unknown then, except for the very rich. Consequently, bigamy (or just living with somebody else under a different name) was very common.
