  • BDM index marriage

When you find a likely marriage on the bdm index how do you find out what the grooms name is? I've found a marriage for Harriet Hinsley in 1882 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, but there are three brides and two grooms on the page and have a sinking suspicion neither of the grooms is hers (I checked the censuses and wasn't able to find her under either of the surnames).

What do I do in cases like that?

I presume this is the entry you are looking at:

    Marriages Sep 1882
    Bartholomew Jessie
    Denial Charles Henry
    (Harwood Elizabeth)
    Hinsley Harriet
    Vessey George Henry
    Sheffield 9c 519

There are usually only four names on the list which possibly means that one has been mistranscribed - so the first thing to do is check the actual image where you will see that Elizabeth Harwood should really be 9c 549.
    That leaves you 4 names.
The next thing I would do is to try to pair off the other four couples in the 1891 census - I'll have a look to see if I can see anything.

There is an entry in the 1891 census of a Charles Henry Denial with wife Jessie, living in Sheffield
      RG12; Piece: 3832; Folio 60; Page 26
      - Ancestry.co.uk

.. I'll see if I can find the other couple together.

I can't see George Vessey and Harriett together in a census, but there is a death of a Harriett Vessey in Jun 1883 age 23, Ecclesall B. 9c 192

Agewise it matches up with a Harriett Hinsley on the 1871 census, born c 1861 Sheffield

          Thanks for that.

Looks like she died relatively young. :(

If it's the same person - just guesswork really and obviously the only way to be sure is by getting certificates.

It'll have to do for now: she isn't on my main line.

While we're on the subject, I have a Martha Ranford marrying in 1860 in Worcestershire, but she's the only one that shows up: it's just a single entry.

I see on Ancetry BMD that there are the following entries on the saem page as Martha Ranford:

                  George Robert Hodges
                  Ellen Pratt
                  David Workman.

                  Does that help?
