seems you can access certain things like your trees without being a paid up member or have I got it wrong??

I think you have always been able to access your own tree if you weren't a paid up member - you can also access trees that you have had an invite to.

1881 census has always been a freebie - but I think it applies to the index only, not the images.

elaine is correct. you can access trees you are a member of, and your own, and you can see the 1881 index, but everything else is paid member only.
